Liebfraumilch (remember that?) was first produced here and the Rheinhessen covers a huge area of around 25,000 hectares. Liebfraumilch has now become a generic term for medium sweet white wine and is now produced in the Rheinhessen, Pfaltz, Rheingau and Naha regions.
The region lies across the Rhine from Rheingau and is bordered by the Nahe and Pfaltz wine regions.
The sandy soil and the predominance of Muller Thurgau gives soft, easy to drink wines and the whole region is awash with co-operatives producing average quality wines.
