Pinot Grigio 2007 San Angelo Vineyard, Banfi £7.99
A safe and tasty choice - the kind of wine you can buy a case of and enjoy over the next 12 months, without breaking the bank.
It is good enough enough to impress your friends at a dinner party and cheap enough for you to crack open a bottle mid week and not feel guilty!
This is from a single vineyard called San Angelo in Tuscany and is made by a high respected producer.

Bonterra Vineyards Chardonnay 2005/2006 Mendocino (USA) £9.49
Still feeling virtuous from the New Year Detox? Then Go Organic with this delightful wine from the US of A (don't hold that against it - it really is rather nice).
The Majestic wine buyer describes it as 'A well-balanced Chardonnay with subtle nuances of vanilla oak, crisp acidity and a full rich flavour'. I'd go with that.
It's not too oaky and well worth paying just under a tenner a bottle for it.

Red wine recommendations
Swartland Winery Pinotage 2006 £4.69
For the cash strapped, this is a bargain bucket but super gluggable chunky red from South Africa.
South Africa’s national grape is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault and produces robust, luscious wines abound with juicy fruit. This example, from the west coast of South Africa, has lively cherry and blueberry flavours with a mouthwatering finish. “Superb” Malcolm Gluck, Superplonk.
"Very drinkable" Piers, PocketVintages.

Wakefield 'St Andrews' Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 Clare Valley £19.99
Lucky enough to be a fat cat? Got a good bonus last year? Spend some of it on this 'beaut' (that was Ozzie).
Showing lively, black cherry, liquorice and cassis fruit characters, balanced by subtle cinnamon, spice and cedar notes. With a strong palate and fine, long tannins and clean, crisp finish, it is a perfect partner to classic roast beef with all the trimmings.
Bottle aged pre-release, the wine can be enjoyed now or cellared successfully until 2012.

A fantastic and good value pudding wine, perfect with most desserts or simply if you fancy an 'apero' as my Mum would say, before dinner...
